Welcome messages

As President of the Chinese Chemical Society (CCS) and Executive Chairman of the 54th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) Organizing Committee, I am delighted to be part of this wonderful gathering of the world's future chemists. At this moment, I can’t wait to welcome all the participants, our young chemistry talents from all around the world.

CCS has had a long history with IChO. In 1984, CCS set up the  Chemistry Olympiad (CChO) among high school students nationwide. Since 1987, CCS started to participate in IChO. More than 100,000 Chinese high school students participate in this event each year. From this initial interest in chemistry, it has had encouraged countless teenagers in China, and lead to a life-long pursuit of chemistry. There are in fact some friends and colleagues of mine who have benefited from their experiences of participating in CChO and IChO in their high school years and now have becoming distinguished young scholars. I am deeply proud of this.

CCS hosted the 27th IChO for the first time together with Peking University in 1995, and 27 years later, we will team up with Nankai University to hold the IChO again. I would like to show our great appreciation to the IChO International organizing committee, for their trust in CCS. I also want to thank the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and the Tianjin Government for [their] great support during years of organizing. Most importantly, I am sincerely grateful to all the staff and volunteers who have been involved in this systematic work; teachers and students, with their unparalleled creativity and dedication will make this IChO a big success as we all wish!

It is known that 2022 is the United Nations International Year of Basic Science for Sustainable Development. As a core subject with strong practicality, chemistry has made unparalleled contributions to the progress and development of human society in the past. There is no doubt that chemistry will continue to make greater contributions to the sustainable development of the world and a better life for mankind in the future. I wish you all the best of luck in the 54th IChO.

I am ZHOU Qilin, an organic chemistry professor from the Chemistry College, Nankai University in China. It is our great privilege to hold the 54th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) at Nankai University in Tianjin, China in 2022.This is the second event in China as the 27th IChO was held in Peking University in 1995. As the chairman of the scientific committee of the 54th IChO, I am very pleased to welcome you all to the 54th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) in China. I hope you will enjoy the event in Tianjin and take back many pleasant memories with you.

Chemistry is the science that studies the composition, structure, properties and chemical changes of substances. As the central science, Chemistry not only connects with other scientific disciplines but also affects our lives. The knowledge derived from chemistry allows us to know, change and improve the world we live in. Chinese civilization has made outstanding contributions to chemistry, such as gunpowder and papermaking among the four great inventions, as well as ancient Chinese alchemy, bronze ware, Chinese herbal medicine, the first artificial synthesis of bovine insulin and so on. I sincerely hope that the talented young chemists who will shape chemistry and our world in the future will  develop quickly. We would like to make our contributions to the development of these young chemists in the IChO2022 Tianjin.

There is an old saying in China: “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”. I hope all of you will study chemistry, enjoy chemistry, and use chemistry to change the world.

We look forward to welcoming you to participate in the 54th International Chemistry Olympiad, and wish you success in this great scientific event in Tianjin.

A chiral catalyst developed by Zhou’s team set the world record for the efficiency of chiral molecule synthesis, with one catalyst molecule able to convert 4.5 million substrate molecules.

Chiral molecules have an asymmetric structure, with two enantiomers that, like the human hands, are mirror images of each other but cannot be superimposed identically.

The chiral spiro catalysts developed by Zhou’s team have been applied in the synthesis of many chiral molecules including chiral medicines.

Zhou has promoted chemistry education and research in China in his unique way, and the friendly education and research atmosphere he established is impressive. —‘China Daily’ (http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/edu/2020-01/17/content_37532670.htm)

We are looking forward to welcoming you from all over the world to participate in the 54th Chemistry Olympiad in 2022, at Nankai University, in Tianjin city. In Northern China, Tianjin, ‘the emperor’s docks,’, is a key junction of transportation and communication for China and its connection with the world.

As the Vice-Chancellor of Nankai University, it is my greatest pleasure to introduce Nankai University, the 54th IChO host. Founded in 1919, Nankai University has played a vital role in Chinese education over the last 100 years. Today, Nankai has grown to three modern university campuses, with a full range of educational institutions. Nankai University is a leading multidisciplinary, research-oriented state university, consisting of 26 colleges, covering areas from the natural sciences to the humanities, at all levels. As a member of the Global University Leaders Forum, Nankai University strives continuously to deepen its internationalization and globalization, both in education and research. Not only does Nankai offer opportunities for students to study abroad, but it also provides a growing number of well-supported international studentships and scholar bursary programs each year. These broaden our academic horizons and contribute to building a worldwide academic community and a shared future for humankind.

As a chemist, I have found that Chemistry starts from simple concepts and extends to understand the complexities of the world. Here at Nankai, one is always encouraged to develop social responsibility, practical capabilities, and a creative spirit. This spirit is also shared with the IChO, so we are genuinely looking forward to welcoming the young Olympians to Nankai University, bringing sparks of inspiration, ideas and scientific talent, and starting friendships. Right now, we are working as hard as possible to ensure you will have a safe and special IChO in China. We sincerely hope that the pandemic will be over and the world will go back to normal quickly.

We are looking forward to welcoming you to Tianjin, in 2022!
