n October 20,2020,the Preparatory Meeting for the 54th International Chemistry Olympiad in 2022 was held in the College of Chemistry, Nankai University. Professor Duan Lianyun, Director of the Competition Committee of the Chinese Chemical Society, Professor Wang Yingxia, member of the committee, Researcher Zheng Suping, Executive Deputy Secretary General of the Chinese Chemical Society, Professor Zhu Shoufei, President of the College of Chemistry, Professor Guo Dongsheng, Vice President of the College of Chemistry, Professor Cheng Fangyi, Associate Researcher Ji Jingcheng and Assistant Dean Professor *****jun attended the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Professor Guo Dongsheng.

At the preparatory meeting, the College of Chemistry reported on the preliminary preparations for the 54th International Chemistry Olympiad in 2022, focusing on the preparations for the conference budget arrangement, competition venues and facilities, reception and accommodation arrangements, and volunteer selection methods. The representatives of Nankai University and the representatives of the Chinese Chemical Society have discussed and determined the organization setting and personnel composition principle of the competition, the overall structure and presentation mode of the website, and preliminarily selected the date of the competition.

Professor Zhu Shoufei said that the 54th International Chemistry Olympiad in 2022 would be hosted by the College of Chemistry, Nankai University, which fully reflects the recognition and trust of international and domestic experts in the chemistry discipline of Nankai University. As the organizing unit of this event, the College of Chemistry, Nankai University will carefully prepare, plan and actively promote the event arrangements, reception services, cultural activities and hardware facilities, so as to provide a perfect chemical festival for chemistry colleagues all over the world. Finally, Professor Zhu Shoufei expressed his heartfelt thanks to the leaders of the Chinese Chemical Society and the Competition Committee for their presence, and hoped that they would continue to provide strong support and guidance.

Professor Duan Lianyun said that the preparatory work of the College of Chemistry, Nankai University was thoughtful, meticulous and well-organized, which fully reflected the professionalism and a high organizational level of Nankai chemistry. Also, Nankai University was full of confidence in successfully hosting the 54th International Chemistry Olympiad in 2022. 

Researcher Zheng Suping said that as the co-organizer of the competition, the Chinese Chemical Society will cooperate with the College of Chemistry, Nankai University and make joint efforts to ensure the success of the competition.

Before the preparatory meeting, the Chinese Chemical Society and its delegation inspected the proposed experimental competition venue - the National Demonstration Center for Experimental Education in the comprehensive experimental building of the Balitai Campus, in order to understand the setting, laboratory layout and capacity of the center, and to put forward opinions and suggestions on the transformation of the laboratory and the renewal of equipment and facilities according to the competition requirements of the International Chemistry Olympiad.

The International Chemistry Olympiad is the largest and most influential chemistry competition for secondary school students in the world. About 800 competitors and teachers from more than 80 countries and regions participate in this competition. Chinese competitors have consistently performed well in the competition. In 1995, Peking University successfully hosted the 27th International Chemistry Olympiad. Entrusted by the Ministry of Education, the China Association for Science and Technology and the Chinese Chemical Society, Nankai University formally submitted the application to the Steering Committee of the 51st International Chemistry Olympiad held in Paris, France in 2019. After an on-site presentation and voting, our university finally won the right to host the 54th International Chemistry Olympiad in 2022.
