In July 2019, a piece of good news came from the 51st International Chemistry Olympiad in Paris, France. With support from the China Association for Science and Technology and the Chinese Chemical Society, Nankai University officially submitted an application for hosting and made a defense statement to the steering committee of the International Chemistry Olympiad on behalf of China during the competition. Finally, Nankai University won the right to host the 54th International Chemistry Olympiad in 2022. After the 1995 Beijing International Chemistry Olympiad, the grand gathering of international young chemical enthusiasts is returning to China again after 27 years.

The International Chemistry Olympiad is the world's largest and most influential chemistry competition for secondary school students. It is known as the Olympic Games of the international chemical community. In recent years, about 800 competitors, team leaders and other personnel from 80 countries and regions have participated in the annual event. Since participating first in 1987, Chinese competitors have always performed well in this event.

The successful bid for the event reflects the important position of Chinese chemistry in the international chemical community and the academic heritage of chemistry at Nankai University. In the next stage of event preparation, the College of Chemistry of Nankai University, as the local organizers of the event, will carefully plan and actively prepare in terms of event arrangement, reception services, cultural activities and hardware facilities, so as to provide an outstanding chemical festival for the world.
